TODAY IT’S TOO COLD TO ROOF! Normally roofing in North Texas is hot and sunny, but today it is 35 degrees outside! When it is too cold to roof it can be hazardous to the shingles. Cold weather changes the way the asphalt shingles seal and an improper seal can cause leaks and wind damage. Knowing this changes the way a reputable roofing company will install composition shingles.
How does cold weather effect composition shingles?
The composition or asphalt shingles are held into place by nails and sealant. The nails keep the bottom layer of the shingle secured firmly to the roof deck. A line of thermally activated sealant is used to keep the top layer of the shingle sealed to the bottom layer.
What is thermally activated sealant?
Thermally activated sealant requires direct sunlight to activate the sealant. Along with the sunlight, the average daily outdoor temperature during and after installation effects the sealants ability to bond.
What happens if the shingles do not seal correctly?
Leaks and wind damage. If the top layer of the shingles is not secured by the adhesive then a strong wind can easily rip it up and bend the shingle back. The top layer of the shingle keeps the nails from being exposed. If the nails are exposed, then water can leak through the nail holes and into the house.
What is the lowest temperature to install composition shingles?
According to Certainteed’s shingle installation bulletin, “Extra care should be taken when handling and/or installing asphalt shingles when the air and surface temperatures are at or below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
What if the temperature is below 40 degrees?
Roofing in less than 40 degrees is much more work. The installers are cold, the shingles are stiff and the sealant will not adhere. This doesn’t mean you can’t roof when it is too cold, it just means you have to be much more careful. It is recommended to hand seal all shingles on the rake edges and hand seal all individual shingles. Thermally activated sealant can’t activate without the sunlight.
Is roofing in the cold worth the risk?
We don’t think it is. We prefer to roof if it is 50 degrees or warmer with multiple days of sunshine afterwards. The sunshine allows the shingles to soften or “lay down” and adhere to the thermally activated sealant. People are purchasing quality roofs with quality installation from C.W. Roofing & Construction and if it’s too cold to roof we can wait. You will notice our commitment to proper installation techniques by looking at our roofing projects.
Can you install metal roofs in the cold?
Metal roofs can be installed in any temperature. Unlike composition roofs, metal roofs do not depend on adhesive sealant. Nails or screws will keep the metal shingles fastened into the roof deck.
What does C.W. Roofing & Construction think?
In our opinion, it is better to be safe than sorry. The shingles need sunlight and warmth to properly seal and homeowners deserve our best installation. You can read about the quality of our installations or contact us for a free inspection!
