Metal Roofs that look like corrugated panels provide a functional alternative to conventional composition roofing. This type of metal roof provides good energy benefits, low-maintenance and a long-term warranty. It comes with one of the lowest price tags of any metal roof.
Corrugated metal roofing is a very popular roofing option in Wise County. Most of the workshops and barns you see will have some type of corrugated panel on the roof.
Positives of a corrugated metal roof
- Low Cost. The pre-finished panels provide a low-cost metal roofing option.
- Energy Efficiency. The steel panels will reflect the sunlight and prevent some of the heat from getting into the attic space or workshop area. This keeps your home cooler and lowers your utility bills.
- Insurance Discounts. R-Panel roofs are Class 4 UL 2218 rated. This means the roof is impact resistant and can qualify for an insurance premium discount. If the roof has less of a chance of being damaged by hail then there is a less likely chance the roof will have to be replaced in the future.
Negatives of a corrugated metal roof
- Installed with exposed roofing screws. The summer heat in Texas continually beats down on the screw’s rubber seal and will eventually wear it out. After heavy rains, if water sits on the edges of the screws it can rust the screw out. Once the rubber is worn out or the screws rust through, then leaks can occur.
How are corrugated metal roofs installed?
The metal panels are measured to the specifications of the roof and delivered with all of the components. The panels are overlapped and screwed in with roofing screws. The screws have special rubber grommets to prevent the screws from leaking. In case the screws fail, it is smart to use a local metal roofing contractor.
Can a corrugated metal roof be installed over a composition roof?
Yes. The existing composition roof edges will be cut flush to the roof edge. The drip edge will be removed and the new r-panel metal edge will be installed. This type of layover installation can help save on tear-off costs. If the composition roof has had long-term leaks the decking could be damaged. In this situation, the composition roof should be removed and the decking inspected.
Available in many color options, the primary corrugated roofing system on the market is the R-Panel roof.
